S M L / N J 1 1 0 . 1 2 N E W S January 12, 1999 http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/what/smlnj/index.html WARNING: This version is intended for compiler hackers only. We are in the midst of substantial structural changes, and this is a snapshot. It only supports the Sparc, Alpha, and HPPA architectures. Furthermore, there are performance bugs that have to be fixed. We recommend that if you want to use a working version, then you should use 110.10 until further notice. Compiler: Because of stability problems, we have backed out of the 110.10 FLINT changes (there are bad interactions between these changes and the literal lifting and new array representations). The compiler now generates code directly into code objects (instead of into an array that later gets copied into the code object) The greatly reduces the GC activity during big compiles. MLRISC: The MLRISC directory structure has been reorganized. All the optimization modules and their interfaces are in separate directories. Each instantiation of the optimization modules for a specific architecture will follow the same directory structure. Thus the register allocator and its interfaces are under MLRISC/ra, and its instantiation for the DEC Alpha under MLRISC/alpha32/ra; etc.
